# Arizona Permit Test Study Plan for Teens
Getting your learner's permit is the first step toward your driver's license. In Arizona, the process is straightforward, but it helps to have a plan. This guide walks you through exactly what you need to do to get your permit and start driving.
Step 1: Meet the Age Requirement
In Arizona, you can apply for a learner's permit at age 15 and a half. You will need to hold your permit for at least six months before you can get your license, so starting at 15 and a half puts you on track to get licensed right when you turn 16.
Step 2: Study the Arizona Driver License Manual
The permit test covers material from the Arizona Driver License Manual. You can download it free from the Arizona Department of Transportation website or pick up a copy at any MVD office.
Focus on these sections:
- Traffic signs and signals
- Right-of-way rules
- Speed limits and safe following distances
- DUI laws and consequences
- School zone and work zone safety
Step 3: Take Practice Tests
Practice tests help you get familiar with the format and identify areas where you need more study time. Several websites offer free Arizona permit practice tests. Take multiple practice tests until you are consistently scoring 90 percent or higher.
Step 4: Gather Your Documents
When you go to the MVD, you will need:
- Proof of identity (birth certificate or passport)
- Social Security number
- Proof of Arizona residency (utility bill, bank statement, or school records)
- Legal presence documentation if applicable
Check the AZ MVD website for the complete list of acceptable documents.
Step 5: Pass the Written Test
The permit test is a multiple-choice exam covering traffic laws and safe driving practices. You will take it at an MVD office or an authorized third-party provider. If you fail, you can retake the test, but you may have to wait a day and pay a retest fee.
Step 6: Pass the Vision Test
You will also need to pass a basic vision test at the MVD. If you wear glasses or contacts, bring them.
Step 7: Start Driving Lessons
Once you have your permit, you can start behind-the-wheel training. Arizona requires 30 hours of supervised driving practice before you can get your license, including 10 hours at night.
At Deer Valley Driving School, you must have your permit before your first lesson with us. We offer packages starting at $200 for the Express Lesson, with our most popular option being the License-Ready Package at $680 for 10 hours of professional instruction.
A Note on Timing
You can complete all your driving lessons and even pass your final road test before your six-month permit waiting period ends. Your results are banked and ready when the time comes. This means if you start at 15 and a half, you could be fully trained and ready to get your license the day you turn 16.
