Step 1
Gather your documents
Before you go to the MVD, make sure you have everything. Missing one doc = wasted trip.
- Proof of identity (birth certificate, passport, or state ID)
- Proof of Arizona residency (school records, utility bill, or bank statement)
- Social Security number (card or document showing it)
- Parental/guardian consent form if under 18 — Download form (PDF)
- $7 permit fee (cash or card)

Step 2
Study for the written test
Most people pass after a few days of focused review. Use official materials and aim for 90%+ on practice tests before you go.

Step 3
Take the permit test
There are two ways. Pick the one that applies to you.
Online Permit Test @ Home
Take the written test online at home with a parent — no MVD visit, no line. Log in at ServiceArizona.com and test from your couch.
Visit an MVD or Third-Party
Test in-person at any MVD or third-party provider. Third-party locations are almost always faster — search 'MVD third party [your city]'.

Do I need a valid permit before behind-the-wheel lessons?
Yes. DVDS students need a valid Arizona instruction permit, driver license, or other legal authorization before they can drive during a lesson.
What should I do after I pass the Arizona permit test?
After the permit is active, book private lessons so the student can practice safely with an instructor and build toward license-ready skills.
Can permit holders work toward the road test waiver?
Yes, eligible permit holders can choose a waiver-eligible DVDS package, complete required milestones, and take the final evaluation when they are ready.
