Safe, quiet places to reinforce what you learn during behind-the-wheel lessons with Deer Valley Driving School.

Quiet neighborhood street in North Phoenix ideal for new-driver practice
Instructor-recommended areas are quiet, well-lit, and have predictable traffic patterns.

Why These Routes Work (and How to Use Them)

Practice makes permanent — but only when you’re repeating the right habits. Use the routes below to supplement your professional lessons with our ADOT/MVD-certified instructors. Each location includes skills to focus on and the best times to go.

Safety note: Always obey posted signs, avoid private/HOA-restricted roads, and choose low-traffic hours (early morning/evening). If an area feels busy, pick another from the list.

Route 1 — Norterra Shops Loop (Off-Hours)

Area: The Shops at Norterra complex loops and service roads (off Happy Valley Rd & I-17). Visit early morning or after business hours.

  • Skills: low-speed steering control, right-of-way at 4-way stops, turn-in/turn-out timing, parking-lot etiquette.
  • Pro tip: Practice pull-through parking and reversing into a stall with a spotter.

Route 2 — Office Parks West of Deer Valley Rd (Weekends)

Area: Business parks near Deer Valley Airpark (between 19th Ave and 7th St, north of the 101). Weekends are quiet.

  • Skills: scanning at uncontrolled intersections, lane positioning on wide streets, smooth stops, curb-approach practice.
  • Pro tip: Use long, empty stretches to dial in constant-speed driving at 25–35 mph.

Route 3 — Residential Grid near 35th Ave & Pinnacle Peak

Area: Neighborhood grids west of I-17 with consistent speed limits and clear sightlines. Go after school hours and before dark.

  • Skills: right-of-way decisions at 2-way/4-way stops, pedestrian awareness, parked-car clearance, turning into correct lanes.
  • Pro tip: Run “left-right-left” intersection scans out loud to build habits.

Route 4 — North Valley Pkwy & Side Streets (Off-Peak)

Area: Segments of North Valley Pkwy and adjacent side streets between Happy Valley Rd and Dove Valley Rd.

  • Skills: lane changes with mirror-signal-shoulder checks, speed control on 35–45 mph roads, safe merges from side streets.
  • Pro tip: Practice “time-to-merge” decisions with a coach counting 1-1000-2.

Route 5 — Sonoran Desert Dr / Sonoran Preserve Access (Daylight)

Area: The calmer stretches of Sonoran Desert Dr (avoid trailhead congestion). Stick to daylight for visibility and wind management.

  • Skills: managing slight grades/curves, maintaining following distance, handling light crosswinds.
  • Pro tip: Use 3–4 second following distance (6+ in wind/dust).

Route 6 — School & Community Lots (When Empty)

Area: Large, empty school or community parking lots in North Phoenix (when not in use). Always check signage.

  • Skills: steering finesse, tight turns, parking (angle, perpendicular, reverse), smooth braking/acceleration.
  • Pro tip: Set up two small cones (or chalk spots) to simulate parallel parking boundaries.
