Real answers to the questions Phoenix parents ask DVDS instructors most often, from pickup logistics and lesson length to freeway readiness and road test waiver eligibility.
By Deer Valley Driving School
Parents usually ask practical questions before the first lesson. They want to know how pickup works, whether their teen will be pushed too fast, and what they are responsible for between sessions.
Where do you pick up my teen?
We can pick up from home, school, or work. Free pickup and drop-off are included across all of our service areas, covering 25 cities around the Phoenix metro.
The instructor arrives in a clearly marked DVDS dual-brake training car, so your teen knows what to look for. Parents do not need to be home for pickup as long as the address is confirmed when booking.
How long is each lesson?
Our standard lesson is 2.5 hours. That gives the student time to settle in, warm up, work on new skills, and finish with a review.
Shorter sessions often end right when a teen is finally getting comfortable. Lessons are scheduled individually, so families can space them out based on the teen's comfort and how much practice they are getting at home.
Will my teen drive on the freeway?
Not until they are ready. We assess comfort level, steering control, lane position, scanning, and surface street decision-making first.
For many teens, freeway work begins after two or three lessons on local roads. When that time comes, we usually start with quieter stretches of Loop 101 or I-17 north of Deer Valley rather than heavy rush-hour traffic.
What is the road test waiver?
Arizona allows approved driving schools to administer the road test instead of sending students to the MVD for that final driving exam. If your teen completes a qualifying package such as License-Ready or Ultimate, they can take that test with their instructor in the same car they trained in.
That setup removes the need for an MVD road test appointment and lets the student test in a familiar vehicle.
What if my teen gets nervous or wants to stop mid-lesson?
That is completely normal, especially in the first few sessions. If a student gets overwhelmed, we slow the pace, move to a quieter area, and talk through what is happening.
If the teen needs to stop, we stop. Unused time can be made up. One-on-one lessons help because there is no audience and no peer pressure.
Do I need to add my teen to my car insurance before lessons?
Not for DVDS lessons. The training car is fully insured, so your teen does not need to be added to your policy to drive with us.
You do need to add your teen to your insurance before they practice in your personal vehicle. Most insurance companies want to be notified once a teen has a permit.
How many lessons does my teen need?
That depends on the student. Some teens are ready after 5 hours in our Intro package. Most families do well with 10 hours in the License-Ready package. Teens who are anxious or need more repetition often benefit from 20 hours in the Ultimate package.
We give honest feedback after the first lesson. Some students progress quickly on roads like Deer Valley Road or 7th Street, while others need more repetition before moving into busier traffic patterns.
Can I ride along during the lesson?
No. Lessons are one-on-one, with only the instructor and student in the car. That structure reduces stress and cuts down on backseat coaching.
Parents still stay informed. After each lesson, we provide a debrief covering what the student practiced and what should be reinforced during supervised practice.
What should my teen practice between lessons?
Supervised driving with a parent or guardian is a major part of progress. Arizona permit rules require a licensed driver age 21 or older in the front passenger seat during that practice.
Start with neighborhood driving, then build up to busier roads as the instructor recommends. Aim for 20 to 30 minutes per session. Practice what was covered most recently, and hold off on the freeway until the instructor gives the green light.
What if we need to reschedule?
If you need to move a lesson, give at least 48 hours' notice and there is no fee. Inside 48 hours, a $75 reschedule fee applies.
You can reschedule through the booking system or by calling (602) 663-3502.
